An expose' written by Jeffrey Klein reveals McCain's questionable record. He takes issue with the NYT story about McCain 'declining a promotion to admiral to enter the senate.' Retired Admiral John R. Batzler, former commanding officer of the U.S.S. Nimitz, and retired Admiral Peter Booth both refute the story.
The article alleges over 600 pages of McCain's military record have not been released. So, how did a Annapolis grad at the bottom of his class get offered the most sought-after Navy assignment -- to become an aircraft carrier pilot? Only the most accomplished midshipmen who've competed furiously for the few carrier pilot openings get such assignments. After four abysmal academic years at Annapolis distinguished only by his misdeeds and malfeasance, no one with a record resembling McCain's would have been offered such a prized career path. The justification for this and subsequent plum assignments should be documented in McCain's naval file. But it isn't. Neither are the details of the loss of his fifth plane.
The article notes that John McCain and GW Bush have a commonality in their backgrounds:
Some of the unreleased pages in McCain's Navy file may not reflect well upon his qualifications for the presidency. From day one in the Navy, McCain screwed-up again and again, only to be forgiven because his father and grandfather were four-star admirals. McCain's sense of entitlement to privileged treatment bears an eerie resemblance to George W. Bush's.Two biographies about McCain, both highly favorable, mention McCain's lack of accomplishment as a pilot. But there are zero evaluations available to the public regarding his placement and low standing among his colleagues. John McCain, by Robert Timberg mentions his "below par" performance as does the other book of the same title by John Karaagac that mentions "he was thus on the lower end of the flying totem pole."
So John, release your military records... all of them. Explain to us how a guy like you, someone who graduated in the bottom 1% of his class, got a highly prized assignment as a Navy carrier pilot? Also tell us why Navy Secretary John Lehman - who is also the National Security Adviser to McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, lied to the NYT about your supposed pending promotion to admiral?
Vietnam Vets Against McCain have produced this video that notes:
John McCain has admitted that he survived as a POW because he traded US military secrets and made Jane Fonda style radio broadcasts in exchange for better medical treatment.

I've been saying for a long, long time that McCain is not what his PR campaign would have us think he is. POW, that's verifiable, War Hero? in what regard?
democommie
I agree that he ain't the best. But this isn't the best evidence to beat him.
A few notable successes as generals started out at the bottom of their West Point class: Stonewall Jackson, JEB Stuart, U.S. Grant, and many others.
His humble beginning at Annapolis was, after all, a number of years ago. He isn't the man for the hour, or at all qualified to be president, but he is a patriot. And his leadership hasn't been terrible.
The hundred years in Iraq quote should spell his doom in the fall if folks are paying attention...when does Battlestar Gallactica come on again? Sorry got distracted. Well, gotta go, the little lady is gettin' Applebees. We love them Triple Plays! McCain who?
